The Anthropological Study on the Vertebral Column and the Bones of Extremities in Korean Infants

Abstract
The author has observed the thickness of the intervertebral discs in 107 Korean infants (45 male, 62 female).
The results are as follows:
1. The intervertebral discs of the cervical part increased in thickness gradually from the 2nd to 7th intervertebral discs. During infancy, it was observed the intervertebral discs increased twice in their thickness.
2. The thickness of intervertebral discs of the thoracic and lumbar part decreased gradually from the first thoracic vertebra to 5th-6th thoracic vertebrae, but below the thoracic 7 there was a gradual increase. It was observed that the intervertebral discs of the lumbar part increased about double in thickness from the first lumbar to 5th lumbar during the infancy.
4. The increasing ratios of intervertebral discs of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar part to the length of each vertebral part is about the same with the increasing ratio of thickness of intervertebral discs of each vertebral part.
